The Bali digital nomad visa, also known as the remote worker visa, is a new initiative by the Indonesian government to attract foreign professionals who wish to live and work remotely from Bali. This visa provides flexibility and an extended stay option for digital nomads, enhancing Bali’s appeal as a top destination for remote workers. We’ll explain the Bali digital nomad visa requirements and how you can apply for the visa.

About Indonesia’s digital nomad visa

The Indonesia digital nomad visa, officially called the B211A visa, is designed for foreign nationals who want to live in Bali while working for companies outside Indonesia. The visa is valid for the whole country, which means it can also be used by foreigners who wish to stay in another part of Indonesia.

This remote worker visa was launched to take advantage of the growing remote work trend. It offers a one-year or five-year stay with the possibility of an extension. The Bali digital nomad visa also allows holders to bring their family members.

The main advantages of the B211A visa include the ability to live in Bali without paying local income taxes if staying less than 183 days, access to the expat community, and enjoying Bali’s unique lifestyle. However, visa holders cannot engage in local employment or conduct business within Indonesia. Instead, they must show proof of employment with a company outside Indonesia.

Who can apply for the B211A remote worker visa?

The B211A visa is available to foreigners employed by companies outside Indonesia who wish to work remotely from Bali or another region in Indonesia. Applicants must show financial stability, typically through a minimum bank balance or proof of income from their overseas employer. The Indonesia digital nomad visa is aimed at professionals who can support themselves without working locally, thus ensuring they do not compete with the local workforce.

What are the requirements for the Bali digital nomad visa?

Applicants must meet several requirements to obtain Indonesia’s B211A visa. These are the Bali digital nomad visa requirements:

  • Valid passport: Minimum six months validity.
  • Financial stability: Bank statement showing at least $2,000 for the past three months.
  • Proof of employment: Contract from a company outside Indonesia.
  • Proof of income: Demonstrating annual earnings of at least $60,000.
  • Photograph: Recent passport-sized photo.

To apply for the B211A visa, follow these steps:

  1. Prepare documents: Ensure you have all required documents, including passport, bank statements, employment contract, and photographs.

How much does the B211a visa in Bali cost?

The price of the Bali B211A visa can vary, but generally, the following costs are involved in the B211A visa application:

  • Visa fee: Around IDR 800,000 ($48.80) to ₱ 1.6 million ($27,200).
  • Agent fees: If using a visa agent, additional fees may apply, often ranging from IDR 3 million ($183) to ₱ 5 million ($85,000).

Bali digital nomad visa and buying property in Bali

Foreigners previously faced challenges in obtaining the right visa when buying property in Bali. The most common solution was to establish a PT PMA (a foreign-owned company) and get a KITAS for a longer stay. Now, with the digital nomad visa, those who purchase leasehold or Hak Pakai properties can also reside in Bali if they meet the Bali digital nomad visa requirements.

However, it’s important to note that this visa does not grant additional property ownership rights. Even with a digital nomad visa, foreigners can still not buy freehold property unless they do so through a PT PMA. Investing in a property does not equate to the financial requirements necessary for obtaining the Bali digital nomad visa.

Taxes for digital nomads in Indonesia

Digital nomads on the B211A visa are not obligated to pay Indonesian income taxes if they stay less than 183 days in a calendar year. However, staying beyond this period qualifies them as tax residents, requiring them to report and pay taxes on their global income in Indonesia. Indonesia has tax treaties with several countries to avoid double taxation, so digital nomads must ensure compliance with local tax regulations to avoid penalties.

Indonesia’s income tax system is progressive, with rates that increase with higher income brackets. The Indonesian income tax rates are as follows:

  • Up to IDR 60 million ($3,660): 5%
  • IDR 60 million ($3,660) to IDR 250 million ($15,250): 15%
  • IDR 250 million ($15,250) to IDR 500 million ($30,500): 25%
  • IDR 500 million ($30,500) to IDR 5 billion ($305,000): 30%
  • Above IDR 5 billion ($305,000): 35%

This makes no sense, if you are not longer than 183 days you do not have to pay taxes anywhere!! To avoid paying Taxes you have to change the fiscal adress, that means more than 183 days, if not what TF means this VISA if I have to pay in my country?
